The front page of the Fairbanks Daily Times on June 21, 1913 read, "The topmost pinnacle of North America’s loftiest mountain peak, Denali, or Mount McKinley, has been scaled by a party of Alaskan climbers Hudson Stuck, Harry P. Karstens, Robert G. Tatum and Walter Harper."

Hudson Stuck (Sewanee, 1892) is best known for co-leading the first successful ascent of Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, in 1913. Known for his leadership, Stuck’s first ascent of Denali remains a symbol of perseverance and a turning point in the history of exploration in North America.

Born in London, Stuck graduated from King's College before immigrating to the United States. Upon arrival, he first set out becoming a cowboy and teacher in Texas. He later matriculated at Sewanee: The University of the South studying theology where he joined Delta Tau Delta in 1889.

Stuck wrote and published five books, chronicling his times in Alaska, in part to reveal the exploitation of the Alaska Native peoples that he witnessed in his work. Two of Stuck's books were edited by Maxwell Perkins, the legendary editor who also edited books by Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Thomas Wolfe.

Just as Hudson Stuck’s daring ascent of Denali required resilience, teamwork and a spirit of adventure, the Fraternity’s partnership with Outward Bound empowers students to push beyond their limits in the great outdoors. These transformative experiences, whether backpacking rugged trails in North Carolina, navigating whitewater rapids in Colorado or sailing open waters in Maine, build confidence, leadership, and a lifelong connection to self-discovery. But like any great adventure, these opportunities require support. Your generosity ensures that students can embark on these journeys, learning lessons that will guide them long after graduation. Join the Hudson Stuck Circle today with a gift in support of our next great adventure.

Outward Bound is the leading provider of experiential and outdoor education programs. On excursions reserved especially for members of Delta Tau Delta, Outward Bound will take our members into pristine wilderness environments and help them discover strengths they didn’t know they had. An essential confidence-building experience, each excursion will last for 7 days, with challenging activities including backpacking, canyoneering, mountaineering, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, or sailing. Whether travel is on foot, by raft, or under sail, participants emerge to find out that they can do more than they thought they could.
