President-elect Donald Trump nominates Delt alumnus for Treasury position
Delta Tau Delta alumnus Ken Kies (Ohio University, 1974) has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy. Kies will bring nearly five decades of experience to the role and is currently the managing director of the Federal Policy Group.
The Federal Policy Group is a lobbying firm that advises clients on tax policy matters before Congress, the Treasury Department, and the Internal Revenue Service. As assistant secretary for tax policy, Kies is expected to serve as a point person at the Treasury Department, working on tax cuts Trump has touted as a signature policy issue for 2025.
Kies served as chief of staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation from 1995 to 1998. The Congressional Joint Committee is responsible for developing and analyzing all tax legislation for the House Ways and Means Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and other committees of Congress.
From 1982 until 1987, Mr. Kies served as Chief Republican Tax Counsel to the Ways and Means Committee of the United States House of Representatives. In that position, he was the chief tax lawyer responsible for developing and analyzing all tax-related legislation for Republican members of the Committee and the House of Representatives.
Kies also held several roles within Delta Tau Delta, including serving as a committee member for the Educational Foundation Board from 2002 through 2012, and later led the Board as Chairman from 2012 to 2016. Kies also received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Fraternity in August 1998 and the Distinguished Service Citation in 2016.
Ohio University recognized Kies’ achievements, choosing him as the first-ever recipient of the “Outstanding Federal Government Alumnus” award in 2012. In 2001, Kies was one of three recipients of the Medal of Merit from the university, which is the second-highest alumni award given by Ohio University.
Mr. Kies is married to Kathleen Clark Kies and has two daughters, Katherine and Kylie. They reside in McLean, Virginia.
