News from Baseball Spring Training

Several Delts involved in major league baseball have gone through some changes this winter. Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch (Stanford University, 1996) was a finalist for American League Manager of the year after leading his club to its first playoff berth since 2005. In his second season as bench coach for the Texas Rangers is Steve Buechele (Stanford University, 1983). Another big league coach, Mike Aldrete (Stanford University, 1983) of the Oakland Athletics has shifted to the first base coaching box after working as the club's bench coach in 2015.

After six seasons with the Washington Nationals, relief specialist Drew Storen (Stanford University, 2011) was traded on January 8 and signed a new $8.375 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Two-year veteran reliever Bo Schultz (Northwestern University, 1986), who appeared in 31 Blue Jays games last season, underwent hip surgery during the off season and was expected to miss Blue Jays spring training. So far, he has had several chances to throw from a mound this month and hopes to be activated in April. Former big league pitcher Rick Helling (Stanford University, 1994) continues in his job as special assistant to Donald Fehr, head of the Major League Baseball Players Association, and lives in Minnesota.
