THE ROAD
Supporting Activities
The Road is much more than just something that undergraduates participate in once or twice a semester when they get a visit from their Chapter Consultant. The Road, like many aspects of Delta Tau Delta, is an ongoing process that truly never stops, even after you have graduated from your undergraduate chapters and move onto a fuller life as an alumnus of our Fraternity. Below you will find a list of activities which we think will help add benefit to your learning on The Road and will also augment the five key areas of development in this member education program.
Life Skills
- Invite someone from your center for student success/career development center to educate the chapter on time management issues
- Invite an alumnus or other professional to speak thoroughly on the topic of identity theft and how to protect yourself in this high tech age
- Organize a community dinner between IFC, NPHC, and NALFO organizations to help build stronger communities - Participate in an on campus cultural program such as salsa dancing, community service event from another organization or World Fest celebrating the different cultures of the world
- Have a personal goal setting chapter meeting at the beginning of each quarter and have everyone share their goals with the chapter so that everyone can hold each other accountable for their own personal development
- Organize a weekly community service day where everyone in the chapter participates in community service: i.e. every Saturday morning someone from the chapter is responsible for the organization and implementation of an event
- Sign up for a ballroom dancing class at the recreation center – trust me, this skill will come in handy when you have to go to your fraternity brothers’ weddings
- Attend a speed dating session – not only is this a great way to develop your personal skill set, but it also helps with skills that are beneficial for recruitment
Health & Wellness
- - Organize weekly workout nights and pair up people in the chapter to be weightlifting partners
- Have individuals in the chapter set health goals, such as losing a target amount of weight in a given month, or setting a goal of running in a marathon
- Participate as a group in a marathon (they can be broken down into relays to complete the whole thing as a group)
- Have someone from the wellness center come speak to chapter about the dangers of binge drinking, unhealthy eating habits, and cholesterol (this is important to everyone – not just older people)
- Offer weekly scripture study at the chapter, switching between different volumes from different religions ( you can check out these books from your campus library)
- Write in a daily journal – this can prove to be highly therapeutic
- Organize a sexual health presentation on the use of condoms and how to safely avoid sexually transmitted infections
Financial Security
- Have someone from the accounting department in the business school give a brief presentation about balancing your check book
- Help members in your chapter open a checking account (believe it or not, some do not have one!)
- Safely educate members about the use of debit cards and credit cards – having a credit card or two is not a bad thing, as long as you pay it off in full each month so that it helps build your credit history
- Have members read chapters out of Rich Dad Poor Dad; The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke; The Millionaire Next Door; Automatic Millionaire – and have them share their thoughts monthly or weekly at chapter meeting about what they learned from the book
- Have the chapter create a game on The Virtual Stock Exchange and see how each member does from week to week (or join the competition with all of your brothers, see our link on the Blog) - Have an alumnus speak about investing tips and on the importance of the time value of money
Career Development
- Have a résumé building workshop with the chapter – make sure that you are reviewing each others’ for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
- Practice cold calling, have the chapter volunteer to work in the alumni center’s call center – there is no better way to work on your communication skills than to actually practice them
- Have the career development center come and give a presentation on choosing a career or have them administer an career placement exam with the chapter
- Invite alumni to come and speak about their success in the professional world – this will help develop a greater sense of what the Fraternity has been able to provide to our alumni
- Invite a clothing retail store to come and give your chapter a dress for success presentation – nothing can kill an interview faster than your clothes
Personal Leadership
- Invite the director of student affairs to come speak to your chapter about different leadership opportunities on and around campus
- Have your members complete the DiSC Profile or another type of behavior assessment and then process your results as a group
- Have your chapter give 100% to the Crescent Society – start leaving your legacy with the Fraternity today!
- Attend a Leadership Academy, Futures Quest, UIFI, or another leadership institute from your campus
- Hold a leadership retreat with your chapter inviting guest speakers to share their stories with you
