Planning your Retreat
Welcome back and thank you for helping Delta Tau Delta Fraternity for the education of youth.

Many of you have already begun and others will soon begin to set the dates of your chapter/colony goal-setting retreat. Set a date the majority of Alumni Advisory Team can attend so they can bond with the students.

The following is a list of recommended items that should be checked and/or accomplished. This list is not all-inclusive, but planning helps you and your team set expectations for your key volunteers and know the times they will need to commit to attend. With recruitment upon us, let's plan our work and work our plan. Please contact Brett Benson if you have any questions.

Several KEY items to highlight:

Retreat Planning
  • Make calls to confirm the date of attendance.
  • Select a location and make a plan that will make the meeting fun.
  • Build a calendar so everyone knows when they will need to visit and work with the chapter.
  • Talk to your advisors about setting time aside to insure each advisor builds a bond with his assigned chapter officer.
  • Avoid "back in my day" stories and focus on what the chapter or colony is wanting to accomplish.
  • Be patient!
  • Make sure you discuss these three questions: 1. How do I tell you you're doing great? 2. How do I tell you need to do better? 3. How do we best communicate on a regular basis to we can get back to one another in a 24 hour period?
  • Make sure the goals are on paper and have dates on when they need to be completed.
  • Review the Management Responsibility Guidelines

Volunteer Spotlight: Larry Swanson

VM: What chapter(s) do you work with? Larry Swanson

LS: There are currently two chapters in the Rocky Mountain West, Theta Omicron at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and Epsilon Omicron at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. I am privileged to be the chapter advisor for each chapter. My home is in Cheyenne, Wyoming, approximately 55 miles north of each chapter.

VM: How long have you been volunteering with DTD?

LS: The short answer is 18 1/2 years.

I first volunteered with the Fraternity in April 1992 after responding to an advertisement in the RAINBOW and became the chapter advisor for the Zeta Upsilon chapter at the University of Wyoming. It happened that then International President David Nagel was in Denver, Colorado, and we met at the shelter in Laramie, Wyoming. Dave really did quite the recruiting job on me. I've been involved ever since and often wondered why I waited so long!

Don't Forget!

National Hazing Prevention Week is Sept. 20 -24, 2010.  Delta Tau Delta reminds chapter advisors and volunteers of the pivotal role they play in the elimination of hazing from our Fraternity.  Without you being the constant voice in the chapter's conversation against hazing, our members will certainly find it more difficult to keep hazing out.  Please visit www.hazingprevention.org for information, statistics and resources to help stop hazing in your chapter!
