Effective chapter retreats
Gene Pregeant, Epsilon Phi Chapter Advisor at Southeastern Louisiana University

An effective retreat is one of the most important factors in ensuring a successful year for your chapter. Among the more important issues to take into consideration are the following:

ADVANCE PLANNING: A meeting with your executive officers well in advance of the retreat is highly recommended. It is important that the officers determine, as a group, what issues are most pressing and most in need of being addressed. Also critical is a determination of what role each officer is going to take in the retreat. It is never a good idea for the advisor to facilitate the entire event.

TIME: Each chapter has its own unique timetables; it is important that you work with your chapter to determine what would be the most effective time to hold your retreat. After several years of experimentation, we have discovered that the last weekend before the beginning of the fall semester yields the most productive results. Brothers have had a summer away from the campus and everyone is returning rested and ready to tackle the new academic year. The timing serves a further purpose as well, as part of the retreat can be focused on fall recruitment, which often occurs within the first few weeks of the new semester.

Delta Tau Delta Engages in Retention Study

Did you know that on average one out of every five members decides not to return to Delta Tau Delta for his sophomore year? That is in addition to the 1 out of every 10 men who pledge the organization and do not initiate. Lack of retention represents the single largest loss of members in the organization - larger than graduation and discipline. Why do our members leave?  What is it that they do not like?  How can the Fraternity encourage them to stay active?

To answer these questions Delta Tau Delta has partnered with Dr. Colleen Coffey to engage the membership in a retention study. Coffey has been involved with Delta Tau Delta for a number of years serving as an assistant advisor to the Zeta Rho Chapter at Eastern Illinois University. Now with Phired Up Productions, Coffey is interested in finding the answers to these questions.

Vital Tasks for Advisors

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER: SCHOOL IS OPEN

Chapter Planning Retreat
Our Chapters' Operations and Programs Reflect Our Commitment to Excellence

  • Ensure a chapter planning retreat has been scheduled at the beginning of the school year and led by a qualified facilitator. This could be the division vice president, division president or a chapter advisor from another chapter. It is recommended the chapter advisor take a complementary role rather than a primary role.
