Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity  |  August 2011 |  Volume 11, Issue 1

From the Executive Vice President
Jim Russell, Executive Vice President

Welcome back to school and good luck as the 2011-12 school year takes off across Delta Tau Delta. It promises to be a busy year in the Fraternity, culminating with the 91st Karnea next August in Austin, Texas.

What's new around Delta Tau Delta?

The Fraternity begins its 154th year with active representation on 130 campuses in 39 states and the District of Columbia with 120 chapters, seven colonies and three interest groups. Our total undergraduate membership has increased by 37 percent in the past eight years, a period which represents two generations of college students. Since the launch of the Fraternity's Sesquicentennial celebration in August 2006 we have increased our campus footprint by 13 percent, jumping from 115 schools to 130. This is due to the strategic and diligent work of many people who recognize the value of the Delt experience and wish to share it with other men who seek lives of excellence.

News from the Central Office

Three staff positions have recently changed. After four years as Director of Chapter Services, Jack Kreman (University of Nebraska-Kearney, 2004) was promoted to Director of Operations and assumed that role June 1. Dave Sirey (John Carroll University, 2008) was promoted from Director of Growth to Director of Chapter Services and started his duties June 1. Back on the staff is Mike Slaughter (University of Oregon, 2006), who traveled as a chapter leadership consultant from 2007 to 2010. He is our new Director of Growth and is responsible for expansion projects and the membership health of existing chapters.

New to the Central Office is JoAnn Balek, who is serving in a part-time administrative assistant position. JoAnn's primary duties are chapter consultant and communications support.

The men and women who work for the Fraternity from the Fisher-Nichols Memorial Headquarters are here to assist student and alumni members in making 2011-12 successful across the Delt landscape. Please let us know what we can do to help your chapter.

Redefining "Fraternity" through recruitment
Mike Slaughter, Director of Growth

How often do you take time to consider your legacy? While some may relegate the word to retirees, legacy is not a word simply reserved for our elders. For members of Delta Tau Delta, it is a calling no matter your age.

Look closely at our Ritual. You will find immediate and forthright references to the importance of legacy. A legacy is not built in a day. It is not a board room decision or even just one spectacular event upon which a man may hang his hat. No, a legacy is a carefully constructed, lovingly woven tapestry of goals achieved and dreams translated to action. What will your legacy be? What type of fraternity experience will you leave for those who follow? Click here to read more.

Summer Leadership Recap
Ellen Shertzer, Director of Leadership Development

Over the past three months, undergraduate and alumni members participated in a several advanced Fraternity leadership experiences. The summer kicked-off with forty chapter presidents and chapter advisors attending the annual Presidents and Advisors Retreat at the Central Office in Fishers, Ind. Twenty-six men spent a week together on the Schooner Mary Day off the coast of Maine. Twenty-nine men traveled to Bethany, W.Va. to walk where the Founder's walked and relive the birth of the Fraternity. Delta Tau Delta provided eleven men with the opportunity to attend the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) hosted by the North-American Interfraternity Conference. Thank you to all of the students, volunteers and donors who make these opportunities available to the undergraduate members.

Iota Theta Models Academic Growth & Accountability
Scott Heydt, International Director of Academic Affairs

Just one year ago, the brothers of Iota Theta at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, found themselves last in the Southern Division's academic rankings with a concerning 2.42 cumulative GPA. A semester later, the men soared up the rankings with a 2.98 performance in fall 2010, followed by an equally impressive 2.99 performance in spring 2011.

Changes to Officer Portal

For those executive committee and administrative committee members with access to Officer Portal, you will notice some changes in the system that will allow you to more effectively manage your chapter's roster. The Officer Portal now features the ability to process member status changes at any time. Alumni volunteers continue to have access to current membership rosters and officers for their chapters.

Let's start the year off right - buy only from licensed vendors!
Alan Selking, Director of Business Affairs

When placing bid day and recruitment orders, we wanted to remind you that utilizing Delta Tau Delta Fraternity's licensed vendors is the only legal way to purchase official, quality merchandise bearing our insignia (ΔΤΔ, Delta Tau Delta, Delts, crest/coat of arms and other trademarks). Additionally, here are a few shopping tips to make sure your experience goes smoothly:

  • Ask for a written invoice or statement from the vendor that summarizes exactly what you have ordered. This way if you do not receive exactly what you ordered you have the necessary backup.
  • Always ask for a specific date in writing on when you will receive the order. Sometimes vendors can provide a ship date, but not an exact date you will receive the order.
  • Always print your order confirmation when purchasing items on the internet.
  • Always be willing to call the vendor to be sure you will receive what you requested in time for bid day or recruitment. Don't feel as though you are being a bother.
  • Only purchase from those vendors displaying the "Official Licensed Product" seal. Unlicensed vendors are not held to quality standards and are not authorized to print products with our trademarks. If you don't see the OLP seal - say NO DEAL!
