The Good Delt Alumni
Following Graduation Every Delt Has Three Obligations to Delta Tau Delta:
- Time — Give at least three years of service as advisor, mentor or house corporation officer working with an undergraduate chapter, or actively participating in a similar way to start an undergraduate or alumni chapter in the area in which you reside.
- Talent — Give what you know professionally throughout your lifetime. As you learn new concepts, share them with other Delts through The Rainbow – specifically, recommendations for membership from your community on an annual basis.
- Treasure — Give financially to Delta Tau Delta every year. In a very real sense you can give back a part of what you received. The dollar amount is unimportant, just being counted is what is important. (Your wallet goes where your heart leads you -- the charitable organizations you care about but do not financially support will one day go away!)
Points to Remember When Encouraging Alumni Involvement:
- Rush your alumni.
- Shake hands when an alumnus visits; show him some respect. Spend some time with him.
- Send alumni home satisfied that the Delt experience is alive and well!
- Treat alumni in the manner in which you hope to be treated someday!
- Keep the shelter or meeting area clean.
Ten Easy Steps to Keep Alumni Involved in the Life of Your Chapter:
- Make alumni visible around the house or meeting area. Invite them to chapter meetings and pledge meetings. Also, get a group of chapter members together to go to an alumni meeting. Someday you'll be attending those meetings regularly.
- Ask alumni volunteer names and the professions of individuals whom Delt undergraduates can contact to have their resumes reviewed, letters of reference written, or to discuss career options.
- Always plan in advance and notify alumni at least eight to ten weeks prior to an engagement to which they are invited.
- Keep a computer database of alumni; include what events they have attended, which chapter members know them, who has corresponded with them, whether they've donated money or not, etc.
- Congratulate distinguished alumni. Let them know you are proud to have them as fraternity brothers!
- Send thank you notes to alumni, especially during Rush, for their support and recommendations. Give legacies special attention — someday you may have a legacy.
- When you share information in newsletters, make sure you include 60% alumni news and 40% chapter news.
- Identify class leaders from years past; utilize their knowledge, resources and contacts.
- Communicate to chapter members and alumni alike — from pledge day forward! — that we are part of Delta Tau Delta for a lifetime, not just for four years.
- Have at least two special events every year to which you invite alumni and their families. Capitalize on chapter anniversaries!
