Pilot program highlights
Omega - University of Pennsylvania
Twenty-eight brothers of Omega Chapter participated in a "Delt's Guide to Job Interviews." The program was peer facilitated by
Ilya Vaynshteyn, Omega, a current senior who has had more than 30 job interviews at financial, consulting, and software firms and Steve Nagy, Omega, a current junior who has interviewed for engineering and research positions. The brothers covered how to secure interviews, how to prepare, how to behave during the interview and how to follow up afterwards. THe brothers learned the need to prepare in advance and how you speak during the interview is just as important as what you say.
Omega Chapter also reviewed "Professional E-Mail Communication." While we all use e-mail regularly, it is often informal, even if the situation is professional. The brothers discussed how you can gain or lose respect through e-mail and being clear and concise is essential.
Beta Phi - Ohio State University
On Monday, January 29, 2007, Beta Phi Chapter enjoyed an etiquette dinner hosted by Jen Pelletier. Mrs. Pelletier is the wife of their chapter advisor, Jeff Pelletier, and is employed at the Ohio Union. The chapter also hosted eight women from Delta Zeta Sorority at the dinner. The membership was instructed in the ways of proper dining etiquette during chapter dinner before their meeting. This programming was very applicable to the formal meals and banquets that their members attend.
Beta Phi is developing an "objectives based mentoring program" for its undergraduates and alumni. Its purpose is to establish an efficient, organized system to provide objectives based mentoring to Beta Phi Chapter actives (and alumni), to help them achieve education, career, business ownership, and personal life objectives. This program is different than the standard mentoring programs in that it is not intended to be a long term relationship as in a father/son or big brother/little brother program. It is intended to achieve specific objectives. Therefore, the mentoring relationships may be short or long term and an individual may have more than one mentoring relationship. More information will be available on this program as it develops.
Gamma Beta - Illinois Institute of Technology
Gamma Beta arranged a time management seminar. Colleen Potter, one of the brother's parents, works in an Adult Learning Center and she presented the program to twenty-three Delts. The session reviewed the benefits of time management and reinforced S.M.A.R.T. goals from the semester kickoff retreat in the fall. The chapter learned useful tips for stress reduction, stopping procrastination, and techniques for planning out their time.
The Gamma Beta Chapter also had all members in attendance during a campus-wide program to discuss alcohol awareness. Rick Barnes from CAMPUSPEAK presented "Drink Think." In this program, students are asked to seriously consider WHY they might choose to drink. They are asked to consider how alcohol shapes their campus community, affecting the users and everyone around them.
Gamma Nu - University of Maine
This fall, Gamma Nu organized the "Delt-lebrity Fit Club" fitness challenge. This program is their version of television shows like Celebrity Fit Club and The Biggest Loser. This is program is designed to help increase the overall health of the chapter through healthy eating and exercise. Gamma Nu had a weigh-in on September 26, 2006 with a nutritionist after her 45-minute presentation to fifteen brothers. On October 8, they brought in a physical fitness expert from the university. By November 28 several brothers dropped a large amount of weight, including their president who lost fifteen pounds. Winners will be announced in April 2007 for this school year. Gamma Mu hopes to challenge another Pilot Chapter to have a friendly competition between chapters to see who can drop the largest percentage of weight.
Gamma Nu also has weekly Ritual education facilitated by the chapter's guide, Stefan Mogielnicki.
Epsilon Upsilon - Marietta College
The brothers of Epsilon Upsilon attended a resume workshop hosted by the Marietta College Career Center. Bill Fournier, the Associate Director/Internship Coordinator, facilitated a workshop detailing best practices and professional advice to create and update resumes and cover letters. The workshop was followed by a question and answer session and each brother received a Career Development Booklet to captue the lessons of this session. Graduate School Statements of Intent were also covered.
On the Saturday before finals, Epsilon Upsilon provided its members with an opportunity to de-stress and get a leg-up on any personal fitness goals, through Delt Fitness Day. Epsilon Upsilon's Member Education Committee rented out Marietta College's state-of-the-art Dyson-Baudo Recreation Facility. Members were able to, over the course of three hours, choose from a variety of activities, including basketball, volleyball, racquet ball, erging, rock wall climbing, and general weighlifting and aerobics. Most of these activities were officiated by brothers with advanced to expert skillsets in these areas. Members reacted very well to this organized sporting event, and the chapter now plans to offer it twice a semester. Brothers had the opportunity to learn about sportsmanship, the finer points of other activities they may not have been involved with before, and the members of the MemberEd Committee had a chance to further develop their own organizational skills and hone their leadership abilities. To maximize the potential of this event, for the future Epsilon Upsilon will arrange to have a community member (or alumnus) come in to offer a tutorial in Dyson-Baudo's multimedia room.
