Consequences

Unfortunately, there are situations that arise during the course of the semester or quarter that require the use of sanctions against a member. These sanctions can include probation, suspension or even expulsion. Each chapter sets different guidelines for the implementation of these sanctions, but below are examples of how some chapter deal with poor academic issues.

  • Beta Tau: In order to fight against active members receiving below a 2.5, the chapter passed a bylaw that requires those members to appear before Honor Board. At their hearing, Honor Board discusses why he was unable to get above a 2.5. Honor Board issues the penalty to the member. If it is a first-time offense, the member usually must attend study tables, turn in grade reports and is placed on social probation. If the member receives below a 2.5 two consecutive semesters, he is brought up for expulsion.
  • Beta Iota: If a brother’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.25, he is placed on academic probation. This entails mandatory attendance at two study hall sessions per week for an entire semester. If his GPA remains below a 2.25 the following semester, he is placed on restricted social probation, which does not allow him to attend social events, not including formal or semi-formal, until his GPA rises above 2.25.
  • Beta Epsilon: They implemented an academic probation/suspension system for any brother who receives less than a 2.3 on a 4.0 scale during any semester. The probation includes:
    • Loss of voting privileges
    • Cannot hold any elected or appointed office
    • Supervising a section of pledge study hours
    • The only way for a brother to remove himself from academic probation is to have a semester and cumulative GPA higher than a 2.3.
  • Theta Tau: A member shall be put on 1st probation if his GPA for the previous term was below a 2.25.  Any member on probation will be required to do the following:
    • Have a session with the DAA to discuss the previous semester and the current semester
    • Submit a copy of the syllabus for each current class
    • Attend class regularly (Only 2 unexcused absences allowed per class).  This is supervised by professor signing appropriate form verifying that the brother was in class.
    • If a member on 1st probation violates any of the proceeding, he shall be barred from one social event.
    • If the DAA observes unsatisfactory performance during the 1st probation period, he shall suggest a tutor for the member.  If the member accepts, it shall be the DAA’s responsibility to find a suitable tutor for the member.  A member can reject the tutor with no penalty.
    • During the semester, a brother who was or is on academic probation must submit a copy of his course schedule and must have his professors report to the DAA on his progress in order to ensure that the member stays in good academic standing.
    • Members who receive above a 2.25 while on 1st probation will be returned to good academic standing.

Social Probation:
A member shall be put on social probation if his GPA was below a 2.25 two semesters in a row.  Any member on social probation will be required to do the following:

    • All requirements of a member on 1st probation
    • He will be restricted from participation in social events (This does not relieve the member from cleaning up, setting up, or any other obligations expected of a member in good standing)
    • Members on social probation may attend parties again if they show improvement during the semester and receive permission from the DAA
    • Members that receive above a 2.25 while on social probation will be returned to good academic standing

Suspension:
A member shall be considered for suspension if he receives a GPA below a 2.25 three semesters in a row.  Suspension can be removed if a member gets a GPA of 2.25 or higher.  After suspension is lifted, the member shall be placed on probation.
